A Page torn from a Fairy Tale
Sintra is one of the most picturesque and romantic villages in the world. It was classified as Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 1995. We can find in the village of Sintra testimonies of every epoch of Portuguese history, palaces and a castle, manor houses and gardens, an endless number of charms that dazzled writers such as Lord Byron or Eça de Queiroz.
Walking in the historic center of Sintra, with narrow streets and beautiful houses, you can discover one of the best kept secrets of the village: its traditional desserts, which still follow ancestral recipes.
Close to Sintra it is also possible to visit Cascais and Estoril. The story of both is more recent but no less inspiring. The Royal Portuguese family spent many a Summer seasons in Cascais, where Spanish King Carlos I sailed and performed oceanographic works, being one of the pioneers in world oceanography. During World War II, Cascais and Estoril were the elected place of many European royal families during their period of exile.
Estoril is also associated with James Bond, since Ian Flemming was inspired by what happened there during the period of World War II, to create this well-known spy.
