The Altar of the World
Fátima was an unknown place until 1917, the year in which an event changed forever the course of its history: the apparitions of Our Lady to three little shepherds Lúcia, Francisco e Jacinta.
Nowadays known as “World´s Altar”, it is the annual pilgrimage place for millions of people and one of the largest centres of Marian pilgrimage in the world.
Near Fátima, you can visit the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, better known as the Monastery of Batalha. Built in 1386 by order of D.João I to express gratitude for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, is an example of Portuguese Gothic architecture, or Manueline style. The Monastery of Batalha was classified World Heritage by UNESCO in 1983.
