The word Fado is derived from the Latin word “fatum” which means fate.

Fado is the expression of the Portuguese soul. With popular origins in Lisbon of century XIX, fado was present in leisure moments. It was sung spontaneously, in open or closed spaces, by everyday characters, mainly marginal ones and the lyrics of the songs portrayed their experiences.

Nowadays Fado is the identity of the city. Fado is confused with life and Lisbon is confused with Fado. The ritual of listening to Fado, played and sung by professionals, is installed in its own houses, where you can also taste dishes or traditional Portuguese cuisine.

The name of Fado is Amália Rodrigues, known worldwide and dubbed the Queen of Fado, who brought this musical abroad and was considered by many to be one of her best ambassadors.

Classified by UNESCO in 2011 as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Fado is part of Portugal’s cultural identity
