A Portuguese city in the border with Spanish territory, Elvas has its history marked by war and constant harassment coming from Spain.
Elvas is famous mainly for its 17th century walls, its forts and its historical centre. It was the incredible preservation of these monuments, among the best preserved in Europe, gave Elvas the deserved recognition: being classified as World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2012. We also find in Elvas the Amoreira Aqueduct, which is considered the largest aqueduct in the Iberian Peninsula.
Near Elvas, the old fortress of Juromenha is worth a visit. The origins of Juromenha, which for many years occupied the honourable position of sentinel of the river Guadiana, are old and full of stories to tell.
In spite of the abandonment of the Fortress, there are still sections of walls and buildings representative of its various construction periods. From the top of the fortress, the view of the river Guadiana, the immense landscape, and the past marks will leave memories to all the visitors.
